Hymenocera Picta, Harlequin Shrimp
Pink and cream, patterned like porcelain: one of the reef's most theatrical residents.
What caught our eyeFeeds almost exclusively on starfish, often keeping one alive and immobilised as a living food store while eating it piece by piece over several days.

Field notes
Hymenocera picta, the harlequin shrimp, is patterned in broad pink and lavender patches outlined in a darker edge, laid over a cream body. The effect is closer to glazed porcelain than to an animal, which is where the theatrical name comes from.
The other half of the shape is the pair of wide, flattened appendages it carries in front of itself, shaped more like petals than like limbs. Between the pattern and those flat planes, the drawing problem is keeping the animal readable as a solid body rather than letting it flatten into a graphic.
We drew it as a study rather than a scene: no rock, no coral, no water, nothing to explain the animal except the animal. Part of the Reef Life collection, printed on demand on posters, prints, apparel and accessories.
