Field notes
Synchiropus splendidus, the mandarinfish, is covered in a maze. Orange, blue and green lines wind across the whole body without ever quite repeating, and the intensity of that blue is what makes photographs of this fish look retouched when they are not.
The pattern is why we drew it and also why it took a while. A maze that is too regular stops looking alive, and one that is too loose stops being a maze. Our version keeps the lines placed by hand and following the curve of the body rather than lying flat across it, which is the difference between an animal and a printed textile.
