Field notes
Phycodurus eques, the leafy seadragon, is a relative of the seahorse, and drawing it means solving an unusual problem: the animal and its disguise are the same object. The body carries long lobed appendages shaped like drifting seaweed, to the point where finding the actual head takes a moment.
Our illustration keeps every appendage distinct instead of blending them into a mass. The camouflage still works on the eye, but the animal stays readable underneath it, which is the balance the whole design depends on.
The palette is deliberately narrow, greens and ochres with the body a shade apart from its own leaves, so the shape separates without being outlined. Part of the Reef Life collection, available on posters, prints, t-shirts, hoodies and accessories, made on demand.
