Field notes
Peltodoris atromaculata is a Mediterranean nudibranch: a flat white oval scattered with dark brown blotches, moving slowly across rock. Divers in the Mediterranean see it often, and it still looks every time like something drawn rather than grown.
Two details make it a sea slug rather than a flatworm, and they are the two the illustration spends its attention on: the branched gill plume near the back, and the pair of rhinophores standing up at the front. Without them the shape reads as a stone.
We drew it from above, the way you would record a specimen, with each blotch placed individually instead of repeated from a pattern. A repeated spot reads as fabric; a placed one reads as an animal. Part of the Reef Life collection, available on posters, prints and apparel.
