Field notes
Odontodactylus scyllarus, the peacock mantis shrimp, is built in plates. Green carapace, banded tail plate, limbs in red and blue, and the whole thing segmented like something assembled rather than grown. Its eyes sit on stalks and point wherever they like, which gives even a still portrait a slightly alert, unsettled quality.
For an illustrator the plating is the whole job. Get the segment edges wrong and the animal turns into a pattern; get them right and it stays a body. Our version keeps every plate readable in its own right, which is also what lets the shape survive being printed small on a chest.
