Field notes
Hydnellum peckii is the reason people stop and photograph fungi. Young specimens carry bright red droplets across a pale cream surface, sitting on top of it like liquid on wax rather than soaking in, and the contrast does the rest.
Drawing it is a question of surface. The droplets have to sit above the cap, hold a highlight, and stay separate from one another, or the whole thing turns into a stain. We drew it close and filled the frame, because at any smaller scale the effect simply disappears.
The underside carries the tooth-like spines that give the genus its name. Most illustrations leave them out; we included a view of them, because they are half of what the species is. Part of the Mushrooms collection.
