Field notes
Follow the Way is one of the designs in the collection that is not a species study. A narrow path runs into a forest where the mushrooms have the scale of trees, with the viewpoint set low, so you are standing on the path rather than looking down at it.
The idea came from an ordinary observation. In a real wood the interesting things are almost always at ankle height, and a walk changes completely once you start looking down instead of ahead. The illustration takes that small scale and makes it architectural: caps become canopy, stems become trunks.
It is drawn with the same treatment as the species plates, individual gills and cap surfaces rather than a generic mushroom shape, which is what keeps it from sliding into decoration. Part of the Mushrooms collection, available on posters, prints, t-shirts, hoodies and accessories.
