Field notes

This one is not a portrait of a single species. It is a study of an effect: fungi that give off their own faint green light, drawn in the dark so the glow is the only source of illumination in the frame.

That constraint is the whole exercise. Light coming from the gills means the cap is lit from underneath, the ground picks up a wash of green, and nothing casts the kind of shadow a normal light source would. Getting that wrong makes the image look like a mushroom with a lamp pointed at it, which is exactly what it should not look like.

We kept the forms naturalistic rather than fantastical, so the strangeness comes from the light and not from the shapes. Part of the Mushrooms collection, available on posters, prints, t-shirts and accessories.

This is an illustration, not an identification guide, and nothing here is advice about picking or eating anything.
