Field notes
I've Got an Idea is a surreal design rather than a species study: an x-ray view of a human skull with a mushroom growing inside it, drawn in the flat, labelled manner of an anatomical plate.
The joke is in the phrase. An idea is always described as something that turns up out of nowhere, fully formed, with no visible warning. The design takes that literally and draws it.
It is the pilot piece for the Contemporary Science Graphic Tees direction, built as a large central plate rather than a small pocket print, so the linework has to hold up across a whole chest rather than inside a few centimetres. It is drawn with the same reference-based approach as the naturalistic illustrations, which is what keeps a surreal image from tipping into cartoon.
